As a well-travelled Ex-Pat cat, my adventures have taken me around the world. At first, it was strange for me but after my second move I got used to it, moving around today is no big deal for an explorer-like myself. However, this is not the case for many of my fellow feline friends. Here I would like to chat a little about how you can help your cat when moving house. Cats can find the moving boxes a lot of fun so be careful where they hide.
Moving is known to be one of the most stressful situations our humans can do in their lifetime, this is also the case for your cats. Your furry feline friends have feelings to consider too!
Most cats become attached to our surroundings, especially if they are not used to moving. I feel safer when I am confined to a single room but it might also be an option to have a friend or family member watch your cat for the day. Movers carry heavy items, so keep your cat out of there. I am a bit of an explorer, so any opportunity of climbing into a box or the back of a van feels very exciting, so it’s best we are kept safely away from the craziness of the move. If your cat gets nervous, curious or is an indoor cat, then it could make a run for it.
My Cat guardians have me microchipped, I also have a special tag I have to wear when I am travelling, this has all of my personal data including medical information logged on it, so if I get lost I can be safely returned home. I don’t wear a collar as I am a house cat and dislike it but when I travel I have my tag attached to my travel box. I don’t wear a collar in transit in case it gets caught on something. Be sure to update your cat’s microchip information and checkout international tags, so they can get home safely too.
The best way to transport your cat is in a specially designed and secure cat carrier. I have one with wheels and I can see out, but at times when I don’t feel like looking out, I have the sides closed so I can get some peace. The wheels also help my human as I am quite a heavy cat. My pet carrier is very well ventilated, it has food and a water compartment. I would recommend lining the carrier with newspaper and putting in a familiar item like a blanket or soft toy for comfort. I have tried a few Cat Carriers and by far I find the KOPEKS Travel Carrier for Pets the comfiest, it is easy to wipe down and it folds away, my human stores it underneath the bed when I don’t need it. You can check out the details of my special Cat Carrier on the link or by clicking the photo of it below.
My top tip: Spray the KOPEK Travel Carrier with Feliway a few hours before travelling and again before you put your cat inside. This helps if your cat is very stressed out about the move. I would also recommend having the carrier out on show a month or so before you move, so they get used to it, they might even use it to sleep in and see it as their safe zone. If you click on the link or photo of Felliway you will see the details for the Feliway plugin and you can also buy the Feliwaay refills for these plugins.
Make a list of the things you have to do for your cat. I know it’s a busy time but you don’t want to have a stressed kitty. We tend to scratch a lot when stressed so spray Feliway or use the plug in to help settle your cat into their new home. If you click the Feliway photo or the link you will see the details for the Feliway Spray.
If you do the above, you and your cat will be content and settle in quickly without too much stress
Happy moving day ☺ MEOW I wish you a puurrfect move!
